‘The Other Mary’ – Mary Morland and the First
Dinosaur

A Talk by Natalia Jagielska

Mary Anning is widely recognised as the most famous woman in palaeontology in the early 19th century, but she wasn’t an island. Mary Anning was surrounded by women in science, one of which was another Mary – Mary Morland – later known as Mary Buckland, following her marriage to Axminster-born famous palaeontologist, William Buckland. Morland was responsible for illustrating the first ever dinosaur, the Stonesfield Megalosaurus, in addition to being a prolific geologist, curator, preparator, palaeontologist and scientific illustrator. Overshadowed by her husband, her story is more seldom told. Come along and find out about the life of ‘The Other Mary’ in this fascinating Talk by Museum Collections and Engagement Curator, Dr Natalia Jagielska.
