TO THE SEA – Maritime Museum Experience in Clay Workshop with Artist Ilse Black
26th September 2026, 10.30am-3.30pm
Inspired by the Museum’s maritime collections and Lyme Regis’ enduring relationship with the sea, artist Ilse Black invites you to explore the relationship between viewer and object through the medium of clay.
Inspired by the fascinating artefacts in Lyme Regis Museum’s Maritime Gallery, each with its own story of the sea, you will create a unique two-part sculpture – one piece representing you as the onlooker, the other representing a chosen object from the collection. Through scale, posture, texture and form, you will express what that object means to you and what it reveals about the museum experience itself.
No ceramic experience is necessary – just an open mind and a curiosity for the stories that objects hold. All materials are provided and your finished piece will be fired and ready to collect from the Museum or posted to you after the session.

TO THE SEA – Legends of Lyme Writing Workshop with Sarah Acton
17th October 2026, 10.30am-3.30pm
Join writer and performer Sarah Acton for a fascinating one day writing workshop delving into the ghost stories, legends and maritime myths of Lyme Regis
Working with objects, photographs and records from the Museum’s Maritime Gallery, you will consider multiple viewpoints, question what history presents to us and shift ideas and events into your own writing and retellings.
With discussion, readings and references to the famous literary writers who visited Lyme and images from the Museum archives, you will connect imagination and memory – experimenting on the page through all forms of writing, This is a warm, fun and inspiring day of exploration for anyone interested in local history and storytelling, open to all levels and all genres in a friendly small group setting.

TO THE SEA – Printmaking Workshop with Emma Molony
21st November 2026, 10.30am-3.30pm
Join artist Emma Molony for a creative one-day printmaking workshop exploring the stories of objects washed up along the shores of Lyme Regis.
Explore the real and imagined stories behind objects washed up and recovered along the shores of Lyme Regis. Inspired by the Museum’s Maritime Gallery, Emma will guide participants in creating original prints that combine natural sea textures with traces of journeys across the sea.
Using monoprint, chine-collé and collagraph techniques, you’ll work with seaweed, collage, drawing and card cut-outs inspired by objects in the Museum’s collection to create your own unique prints. Suitable for complete beginners and experienced artists alike.
