Lyme Regis Fossil Festival receives financial boost through Airbnb’s ‘Best of British’ Fund
The organising team at Lyme Regis Museum are celebrating after winning a grant from Airbnb’s Best of British Fund to deliver the celebrated Lyme Regis Fossil Festival. The grant will help secure the Festival for the next two years, funding the delivery of the Festival’s vision for 2026 & 2027.
Launched in partnership with Visit Britain, this million pound fund aims to boost local tourism, fuel hospitality, and support communities to celebrate and promote the distinctive traditions and special events that make the UK unique.
After reviewing thousands of applications from across the UK, Lyme Regis Museum was selected as one of just 25 winners and will receive a grant to help sustain and deliver an exciting and innovative Festival, supporting local tourism and economic growth in the town and surrounding area.
Lyme Regis Museum was selected as a winner in the Culture and Heritage category for the delivery of the world-famous Lyme Regis Fossil Festival. The Festival which takes place in June in Lyme Regis, Dorset, has become the largest palaeontology event in the UK and celebrates the town’s unique location on the Jurassic Coast and its importance as the birthplace of Mary Anning and the science of palaeontology.
The Festival’s aim is to inspire curiosity and a deeper understanding of the planet’s past by bringing together scientists, artists, educators and visitors of all ages to celebrate fossils and the remarkable discoveries made in Lyme.
Events, exhibitors and activities at this year’s event include: the Natural History Museum, Dinosaur Isle Museum, Jurassic Discovery, the Rock Showman, a ‘Terrible Lizards’ podcast event, palaeoart workshops, a fossil trade show, expert talks and much more.
Through a programme of talks, workshops, performances, walks and hands-on activities, the Festival encourages learning, discovery and a lasting connection with Lyme Regis’ remarkable natural heritage. The event, which is free to attend, is held over two days across multiple venues in the picturesque coastal town.
Bridget Houseago, Director of Lyme Regis Museum and Organiser of the Lyme Regis Fossil Festival said, “I am delighted that we have received this funding and recognition for the Fossil Festival. It will help us to celebrate our cultural heritage and deliver a fantastic Festival in 2026 and beyond whilst also contributing to the economic stability of the town.”
Luke Impett, Partnerships and Public Affairs Lead for Airbnb UK said, “From centuries-old festivals in market towns to hands-on food experiences in coastal villages, Britain is full of extraordinary local traditions waiting to be discovered. Through the Best of British Fund, we’re proud to back the communities who keep these traditions alive and help them grow their visitor offering in a sustainable way. By attracting more guests, we can ensure tourism continues to support local jobs, independent businesses and the families at the heart of these destinations. This investment is about shining a spotlight on the people and places that make Britain unique — and helping more travellers experience that authenticity for themselves.”
The Lyme Regis Fossil Festival takes place on 13/14th June 2026. For more information visit www.fossilfestival.com
